Mercedes sent shockwaves throughout the Formula 1 paddock, confirming rumours they are set to switch to Honda power.

The team revealed Mercedes would dump Mercedes engines in favour of the Japanese manufacturer, as early as Round 3 in China.

“It’s a no brainer” Mercedes Honda Team Principal Toto Wolff told reporters.

“It’s a calculated investment on our part, based solely on one corner of the Australian Grand Prix”

The shock decision comes after Honda’s impressive showing for Red Bull at the season opening grand prix in Australia.

“It’s clear Honda have made enourmous progress over the winter”

“We’re not going to rush into any rash decisions”

“That said, purely on the basis of one overtaking move in one race we’re abandoning our entire engine program”

“Max’s overtake of Sebastian in Australia shows just how far Honda have come”

“Also, Ferrari are shithouse”

It comes as Ferrari and Renault are also in talks with the Japanese manufacturer about a switch to Honda power for 2020.

However, there are reports lead driver Lewis Hamilton is stalling the proposal, unhappy with the changes to his driving setup.

“Oh the F1 car’s fine” Hamilton reassured journalists

“But there’s no f**king way I’m driving a Jazz”
